We know that many if not all chronic illnesses are affected by diet, if not caused by poor diet. Soda and its high content of sugar continues to act as a disease-causing agent.

In recognition of our tradition of excellence in both dental care and service to our communities, Dr. Abdul was awarded the 10 under ten award.

In an effort to highlight the impact that new dentists are having on the dental profession, the MDS Standing Committee on the New Dentist created the Ten under 10 Award program. To qualify for the honor, dentists must have graduated from dental school in the past 10 years and have made a significant contribution to the profession, their community, and/or organized dentistry. Profiles of the selected dentists will appear in the Spring Journal of Massachusetts Dental Society.

LUX DENTAL MISSION SPACE

Access dental care is challenging to many communities both locally and globally. We know from the 2000 Surgeon General’s Report that oral disease has become endemic. 80% of oral pathologies have fallen upon 20% of children. The disparity remains. This is particularly true for minorities and immigrants.

At Lux, we see a social responsibility for healthcare providers to promote the importance of health and wellness. Concepts of preventative care are effective in helping communities’ endemic with access issues circumvent disease. This should be the universal goal.

With a passion for space exploration, Lux Dental with a team of Olin engineering students successfully launched a weather balloon to the edge of space. Mission Space encompassed a figurine of Dr. Abdul Abdulwaheed carrying its placard stating “ORAL HEALTH TOTAL HEALTH”.

The balloon’s payload includes the figurine, GPS device, hand warmers, video and static cameras. The launch took place from an unpopulated region of western Massachusetts. The vehicle achieved an altitude in excess of 90,000 feet. The flight time was approximately 1 hour. A safe and controlled landing was achieved through the deployment of an onboard parachute.

Photographs and videos of the mission were publicized in hopes of bringing attention to the importance of oral health and total health.

DR. ABDUL TESTIFIES TO THE MASSACHUSETTS COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC HEALTH

Dr Abe at Massachusetts Health Committee Meeting

I will not rest until there is access to care for all.
Medicaid is a social health care program for families and individuals with low income and limited resources. Medicare provides health insurance for Americans aged 65 and older who have worked and paid into the system. MassHealth is the state administrator of Medicaid and Medicare.

Dr. Abdul testifying at the senate

A summary of MassHealth Dental Coverage
2002 – Cuts Began
2003 – Preventive services (ie cleanings) got cut
2007 – Dental Coverage Resumed.
2010 – Dental cuts again
2014 – You could fill “parts of front teeth”. Later that year, back teeth could be filled too
2015 – You could get dentures
Teeth saving endodontic procedures are still not covered, even today. You still can’t get periodontal treatment. Periodontal disease is associated with heart disease and numerous other chronic illnesses.

A lack of commitment to providing consistent and comprehensive Medicaid and Medicare dental coverage is the true barrier to access for care.

Special COVID-19 Alert Message

Our hearts go out to those who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a company that cares deeply about our patients and team members, we have taken necessary measures to ensure the safety of all by employee and patient screening as well as added extreme sanitization measures.

So much is unknown right now, but one thing we do know is that we can help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 and protect ourselves and our community by taking steps to limit our exposure to others. This is why we have made the decision to be open on a very limited number of hours on an emergency basis only. We will be checking our voice mailbox often, so please contact us if you need an emergency appointment. I’m confident we will get through these difficult times together.
